Report Highlights/Talking Points for Pinellas County

  • In 2011 in Florida, more than 2,000 newborns were diagnosed with drug withdrawal syndrome/narcotic exposure (2012, Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration; tbo.com “More Babies Born Addicted in Florida” 07/23/2012)
  • In 2011 in Pinellas County, roughly 19 youth per week were brought to the Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center for an Alcohol or Drug related crime, (Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center).
  • According to the Pinellas County Community Health Assessment produced by the Pinellas County Health Department, Alcohol and Drug Abuse were the top behaviors of concern and Addiction was the #1 health problem of concern (Feb., 2013, PCHD).
  • In 2011, roughly 22 youth per month were admitted to the Juvenile Addiction Receiving Facility, a youth detox program.
  • In 2011 in Pinellas County, roughly 15 youth a day were presented to the Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center for a crime.
  • In the 2010/2011 school year, 661 youth received out of school suspension for Alcohol, Tobacco or Other Drugs.

  • In 2010 in Pinellas County, there were roughly 3.4 Alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes per day (Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles).
  • In 2012, there were 135 cases where Prescription Drugs were present at death in Pinellas County, down from 181 in 2011 (Distrcit 6 Medical Examiner).
  • In 2012, a Pinellas County resident died on average nearly every two days (43 hours) with Oxycodone present at the time of death.  In 2011, a death occurred on average every 27 hours (Distrcit 6 Medical Examiner).
  • In 2010 in Pinellas County, there were roughly 3.5 Alcohol-related motor vehicle fatalities per month (Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles).
  • According to census data, the majority of minorities who reside in Pinellas County live in the Southern portion (St. Petersburg), which also has higher rates of poverty. In Pinellas County, four out of the top five zip codes for youth under 18 living in poverty are in South County. The same is true for youth involved in the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice system. The same top five zip codes of Florida Department of Juvenile Justice involved youth are the same top five zip codes for Single Female Households (again, four out of five are in South County, especially the areas of Childs Park and North Greenwood).
  • From 2009-2011 in Pinellas County, roughly 35.3 out of every 10,000 people were admitted every day to Pinellas County Emergency Rooms due to an Alcohol-related incident (www.heatlhytampabay.com). With a population of almost a million people, that is 3,530 people a year or 9.7 every day.
  • In 2008 in Pinellas County, roughly 27 people were admitted every month to Pinellas County Emergency Rooms for Prescription Drug related incidents (Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration).
