Local Pizza Place to Serve Up More than Pizza on February 4

Local Group Celebrates National Prevention Day with ‘Slice of Prevention’ Event at The Pizza Joint

Tampa, Fla.  – On February 4, 2013 the LiveFree! Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Pinellas County serves up A Slice of Prevention at the Pizza Joint in celebration of National Prevention Day, heightening awareness of the community’s 2012 significant decreases seen in alcohol, marijuana and other drug use. LiveFree! Pinellas is “picking up the tab” for up to $200.00 in pizza sales on a first come, first serve basis as a way of saying thank you for investing in prevention.

National Prevention Day, which is supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, focuses on educating communities about behavioral health findings, facts and issues. LiveFree! is partnering with The Pizza Joint, a New York style dine-in, delivery and take-out family pizza parlor located at 6723 49th Street North in Pinellas Park.

Here’s how it works.  Customers ordering a whole pizza with toppings from The Pizza Joint on Monday, February 4th will find their the toppings arranged in the shape of one of four numbers, each signifying an important (and encouraging) statistic from the recent Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey results. The Pinellas County-specific results communicated in toppings will correspond to the percentage decrease seen in alcohol, marijuana and other drug use in Pinellas County, all proof that preventative messages are working.

Accompanying the pizzas and attached to the boxes will be a flyer explaining each statistic and the strides Pinellas County has made in keeping children and young adults safe.

“Celebrating Success helps us recruit and engage more youth and families advocates.  A Slice of Prevention, honoring National Prevention Day, is our way of saying job well done,” said LiveFree! Executive Director Jackie Griffin. “To continue our progress in 2013 we need more people to get involved and more business to partner with us.  We are grateful that the Pizza Joint  is helping us to spread the word and share our progress, one bite at a time.”

“In the restaurant industry, alcohol and other drug use is incredibly prevalent,” said Ron Ferrer, owner of the Pizza Joint. “We are excited to partner with LiveFree! for this great event and are looking forward to assisting the group in spreading important messages of prevention to our loyal and supportive customers.”

Those wishing to donate to LiveFree! for their special “Prevention Pizza” will be invited to do so when their order is placed.

National Prevention Day is designed to serve as an opportunity to start planning initiatives and involvement with the second annual National Prevention Week, slated for spring 2013. The week-long observance is designed to spread messages of substance abuse prevention and tout the great work being done by organizations dedicated to reducing its prevalence. It will take place ahead of a crucial time of year that often involves occasions like prom, wedding and summer vacation when alcohol and drug use tends to increase.
